I am very fortunate to have crafty friends who are happy to share their knowledge so first I would like to start by saying thanks to Wordsmithcrafts for having the patience to teach me a bit of blacksmithing. Please head over to his site for some more info on the multi-talented artist www.wordsmithcrafts.co.uk/
Out of all the crafts I have tried my hand at blacksmithing ranks up near the top in terms of fun and newness. There is something really pleasing about learning a completely new medium to work with and in front of a forge on a cold snowy day is certainly the place to be. I have seen examples of several different forges from viking forges to wartime forges and modern ones as well as work bellows from many in between. Although I have seen blacksmithing a fair few times now at various viking shows and friends workshops I have only really had a go at creating something twice before and both times I made "s-hooks". So I was keen to have another go and move on to creating something else which resulted in the pennanular broach. I am pleased with the result despite its flaws but only wish I had taken a photo of it before bending as it was so wonderfully even!
These are the S hooks I previously made.
Blacksmithing is something I definately want to try again and thankfully will probably get the opportunity to do so. I love watching people work the metal. The glow of white hot metal and sparks are beautiful and hypnotic whilst the sound of hammers on metal take you back to an older time. It creates a very satisfying environment.
There are lots of examples of many different types of metalwork including blacksmithing and lots of those examples are iron age, viking or saxon. I have only included some of the skill that exists out there in deviantart world.
Unfortunately I have been really ill today and unable to do much today at all so Day 6 may be late but it cant be helped and i am certainly not going to stop even if this is the case. Enjoy.

Viking Challenge Day 4: Copper Alloy Wire Work
:thumb361368848:
The hoard from the morning
After a day of tablet weaving and a day of embroidery to puzzle over I decided to do something I find much easier and have dabbled in before and that is wire work with copper or copper alloy. There are many examples of bronze and silver wire-work finds from the viking era and wire was used to decorate many things. Thin strands of gold or silver wire may be couch embroidered onto an elaborate piece of clothing or used in tablet weave. Wire has been used to make all sorts of rings, torcs, bracelets and fastenings. I decided to try and replicate some of the artifacts I know of that are wither viking
Viking Challenge Day 3: Embroidery (ARGHHHHHHHHHH)
Ok I know I am behind on my uploading and such but there has been a freak snow storm and it has affected the internet really badly plus it also has the effect of making me want to go and play in the snow instead of take photos of crafts :S
Anyway Day 3 brought the dreaded embroidery!
:thumb361166088:
I have never successfully finished a piece of embroidery before and have only attempted one piece previously really not knowing what i was doing at the time. Not a lot has changed since then apart from determination! I started this new design which is based on a scandinavian pendant that was found dating from the 9th to 10th century. admittedl
Viking Challenge Day 2: Tablet Weaving
Tablet Weaving is an ancient form of weaving that actually predates the vikings and the earliest example I have come across is from the 3rd century AD (though I would not be surprised if there are older examples out there). Examples of viking tablet weave include a full tablet weave set up being found in the excavation of the Osberg ship and finds from central Asia dating from the 8th Century which are in such good condition that we can see some of the pattern present.
This craft is something I had been introduced to a couple of years ago by friendly vikings and after making about 30cm of very simple and flawed tablet weave never touched aga
Walk with me Bracken
Yesterday I had to say goodbye as my faithful companion passed away. My dog Bracken. I have had him since I was eight and have never gone through this before. I have allways been adament that I want to be with him in the end and am thankful that this has been so.
For the runt of the litter you did not bad Bracken, giving us 16 and a half years together. Never have I loved a being or felt as close to anyone or thing as I have to my Bracken and this is very hard. Without knowing it we spent our last night sleeping next to one another in front of the fire at my new cottage in calmness. The following day he went back to my parents and I am cont
