I am very fortunate to have crafty friends who are happy to share their knowledge so first I would like to start by saying thanks to Wordsmithcrafts for having the patience to teach me a bit of blacksmithing. Please head over to his site for some more info on the multi-talented artist www.wordsmithcrafts.co.uk/
Day 5: Blacksmithing by NightPhoenixArt
Out of all the crafts I have tried my hand at blacksmithing ranks up near the top in terms of fun and newness. There is something really pleasing about learning a completely new medium to work with and in front of a forge on a cold snowy day is certainly the place to be. I have seen examples of several different forges from viking forges to wartime forges and modern ones as well as work bellows from many in between. Although I have seen blacksmithing a fair few times now at various viking shows and friends workshops I have only really had a go at creating something twice before and both times I made "s-hooks". So I was keen to have another go and move on to creating something else which resulted in the pennanular broach. I am pleased with the result despite its flaws but only wish I had taken a photo of it before bending as it was so wonderfully even!
These are the S hooks I previously made.

Blacksmithing is something I definately want to try again and thankfully will probably get the opportunity to do so. I love watching people work the metal. The glow of white hot metal and sparks are beautiful and hypnotic whilst the sound of hammers on metal take you back to an older time. It creates a very satisfying environment.
There are lots of examples of many different types of metalwork including blacksmithing and lots of those examples are iron age, viking or saxon. I have only included some of the skill that exists out there in deviantart world.
Unfortunately I have been really ill today and unable to do much today at all so Day 6 may be late but it cant be helped and i am certainly not going to stop even if this is the case. Enjoy.

Careful, forging is highly addictive. ^_^
